Stranger is a song written by Jhene Aiko, recorded for the 2011 album 'Sailing souls' Jhene Aiko used her personal experinces as inspiration for her songs. She stated that she was going through trouble at this period in her life saying "At the time I was going through so much in my life that it was so easy to write the songs. I had just had a baby and I was dealing with baby father issues and I had a boyfriend. The songs were just coming and coming. I just had so much to say'.
Jhene Aiko shares that the meaning of the album is just to stay true to yourself and go with what you feel. She shared 'I kinda want to convey the message to just be yourself. Don’t ever lose yourself for whatever reason—because you want to make more money, because you want to be prettier or whatever. I’m not a slave to anyone; I’m sailing my soul instead of selling it.“
'Stranger' was one of the first songs Jhene recorded for “Sailing Souls” she was inspired by a tweet. She then expanded on the tweet by writing a song about what she felt the tweet meant .The beat was done from scratch by the producer Fisticuffs while Aiko wrote the lyrics . Jhene states how she had just gotten herself out of a situation with a “perfect stranger.” Someone she thought she really knew and liked but in all reality neither of them really knew each other at all. She realized that he was the same as all the other men she had been involved with; all wanting the same thing. Initially, the song was centered around the fact that she was intimate with someone she thought she knew so well, but really didn’t. The song started to develop many layers as she wrote it and started to recall different feelings and situations.
We chose this song due to its metaphorical lyrics,as the listener was had to decode the greater meaning behind the song which enables them to relate it to situations in thier own lives Jhene sings about relatable topics which help people in the same situtation think and feel a sense of togetherness and that they are not alone.It was particularly important for me as I consciously did not want a simplistic song with no valuble meaning behind it.This will help to build a fan base as the audience feels as though they ae connected.

In Jhene Aiko's music video she has lots of lipsync, idyllic beach scenea and nature which all portay the idea of spirtuality and freedom, linking to her image. However it does not have much of a storyline. In our version we would really like to revamp and update it to portray more of a relationship storyline to make it more relatable to youth culture as one of main concepts is attracting our target audience by being relatble. A narrative will help make the strong message of the song stand out and get the audience to really think about it
